Entropy Combat Basics & Turn Tactics

Combat in Entropy is classic JRPG geometry with a cruel indie twist. Up to six party members stand in front and back rows. Melee typically needs a clear path through enemy frontliners, while ranged and magic can pick targets more freely. Turn order sits on a visible timeline; powerful skills shove your next action later. Mastering that delay tax is the difference between a stylish wipe and a controlled delete.

Rows and protection

Front-row allies intercept danger aimed at the rear. You are not forced into equal counts per row—previews highlight lineups like four melee plus two crossbows. Overloading the front can accelerate kills but concentrates incoming damage. Overloading the back leaves the line fragile if spears or breakthrough skills exist on the enemy side. Study templates in Party Formation.

Enemy rows matter too. Spears that shove foes backward can expose previously sheltered targets. Use reposition tools when a backline caster is the real threat.

Limb targeting and monster design

Many demons are wrong-shaped anatomy lessons. Targeting limbs can stop movement, weaken swings, or interrupt spells. The infamous walking lungs encounter is a teaching moment: hit the windpipe to stall casting. When an enemy telegraph feels unfair, ask which limb or armor gate the kit expects you to press.

Pierce, Blunt, and armor gates

Some foes shrug ordinary cuts until you Pierce or smash with Blunt weapons. Keep at least one answer in the active six. Crossbows and specialty tips often carry Pierce; maces and hammers carry Blunt. Rankings live on Weapons Tier List and Armor & Spells.

Status and utility

Stun and poison appear early. A mace stunner who never crits for huge numbers can still be S-tier support because a skipped enemy turn is worth more than chip damage. Pair stuns with delayed greatsword cleaves so the cleave lands while enemies are locked.

Turn delay discipline

Heavy slash skills that hit multiple foes also push your fighter down the timeline. Spam them only when the kill is worth the vulnerability window. After permadeath rebuilds, newer hires with fewer perks should favor reliable singles until their stats catch up—see Stats & Perks.

Linking combat to economy

Every fight funds the next recruitment cycle. Wipe recovery pages—Survive Permadeath and Recruit Mercenaries—are part of combat mastery. A perfect rotation that bankrupts you after two deaths is not actually perfect.

Practice plan

  1. Win a fight using only basic attacks to read telegraphs.
  2. Replay with one delayed AoE and note the counterattack.
  3. Add limb focus on a caster.
  4. Swap in Pierce or Blunt for the next armored pack.
  5. Journal results in the Party Planner.

When Act 1 dungeons arrive, revisit this page; new armor verbs may appear, but row logic and delay taxes will still rule the timeline.

Reading the timeline like a resource bar

Imagine each heavy skill as spending future actions. If three enemies act before your cleaver returns, you did not “use an ultimate”—you donated a round. Count enemy cards the way card-battler players count mana. Stun is card draw; Pierce is removal; delay is a fee.

Training drills (ten minutes)

Fight the same overworld pack three times: basics only, then stun-first, then limb-first on the caster. Write which drill felt fairest. That notebook becomes your Act 1 dungeon plan when telegraphs get nastier.

When the game feels unfair

Scripted prologue constraints are not the same as open-field rules. After Draenog stabilizes, unfairness usually means a missing armor verb or a greedy delay. Re-open formation, not the refund page. If camera issues block targeting, fix binds before blaming balance.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Can back-row melee hit the enemy back row?

Generally melee wants enemy frontliners cleared or reposition tools used. Ranged roles are safer for sniping the rear.

Why do my big skills feel weak?

They may be delaying your next turn into enemy actions. Use them as finishers or after stuns.

Where should I go next?

Party Formation for lineup theory, Weapons Tier List for kit upgrades, Survive Permadeath for loss recovery.
